Rudraksha Beads: Rudraksha Beads are made from seeds that come from a species of trees called Elaeocarpus ganitrus or the Rudraksha tree. These trees produce a blue fruit often referred to as blueberry beads. These fruits contain hard seeds that are used to make the beads.
Rudraksha beads are one of the most sacred of all Hindu insignia. They are associated with Lord Shiva and are often described as tears shed by him for the benefit of all humanity. Rudraksha beads are often worn for protection as well as chanting mantras. The seeds are primarily sourced from India, Indonesia, and Nepal mostly for jewelry and malas. They are valued similarly to semi-precious stones. Various meanings and interpretations are given to beads having a different number of locules (or segments).
- The 5 Face Rudraksha is also known as the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha and the Panch Mukhi Rudraksha. They are the most common type considering about 90% of the tree yields 5 Mukhi Rudrakshas. Dragon Blood Wood Beads: The Dragon Blood tree is an evergreen tree that belongs to Dracaena cinnabari. It can be found on the Socotra archipelago. It grows in some of the harshest area that are very rich in limestone. It looks like a giant mushroom when growing, with its single trunk and umbrella-shaped canopy. The canopy of this tree absorbs water and channels it down to the roots. This tree is mostly known for its blood-colored resin that gives it its name. It has been widely used in traditional medicine. Thuja Sutchuenensis Beads: Thuja Sutchuenensis or Sichuan arborvitae, belongs to the cypress family Cupressaceae. It was first described by the French botonist Adrien Rene Franchet based on specimens collected in 1892 in Chengkou County (formerly part of the Sichuan Province). This speciaes had not been seen in nature since 1900 and botanist presumed it was extinct, until its rediscovery in 1999. The local population had been utilizing this species for its durability. All of the large and easy to reach trees have already been depleted, only leaving shrubby specimens and some on slopes too steep to reach. This species is now restricted to a single population on the southern side of the Daba Shan near Chengkou, Choungquing. This is the area where it was originally discovered and it has now been designated as a Special Protection Area to protect the species, although still used among the local community.
